There are an estimated 22,000 blind and visually impaired children and young people in England and Wales.

Every day four more children will be diagnosed with sight loss.

Currently:

  • 90% of those who lose their sight in youth will never work for more than six months at a time in their lives
  • One in four vision impaired children under twelve are depressed
  • Blind and visually impaired eleven year olds are twice as likely to be bullied at school as their sighted peers
  • Two out of five blind children have no local friends to play with
  • Significantly more VI children live in families below the poverty line compared to sighted children

The Royal Society for Blind Children wants to introduce a specialist Family Worker into every region of the country so every family receiving the devastating news that their child is losing their sight can receive the support and advice they need from Day One.
